Known as the “Matriarch of Black Dance,” Katherine Dunham pioneered the art of modern African dance, bringing it to thousands of viewers in the Americas and Europe. From the mid-1940s through the 1960s, she choreographed over 90 dances, maintained the only American black dance troupe, and headlined dozens of shows herself. Dunham was likely inspired by the Revue Nègre of 1920s Paris, and developed a fresher and more disciplined performance group out of this tradition. Colin would go on to do all of her posters.
