CATALOGUE NOTE
Friant depicts two of his close friends resting in the countryside near Nancy : Camille Martin (1861-1898), who studied with him in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Nancy, and Mathias Schiff (1862-1886), painter and sculptor who died prematurely.
Our painting was executed in 1880, when Friant shows interest in landscape and plein air painting. He then executes a series of landscape painted live, in the city or in the suburbs, counting this work and the lots 137 and 138.
